Masses of classes

Knitting season must be gearing up; suddenly this month and next are packed with classes. Let's review:

For the absolute beginner, Helen is offering Learn to Knit in two separate 2-week sessions. You will learn how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off. Believe it or not, that's pretty much all there is to knitting. (Beyond that it's all elaboration....) Each session meets for two Saturdays. Session 1 is 9/10 and 9/17; session 2 is 10/15 and 10/22. $30, supplies extra (10% store discount for class materials).

If you already know the basics, why not branch out into a new technique or a more challenging project? In Next Step Knitting, Helen guides you into new territory: your choice whether you want to try cables, fair isle, intarsia, a felted project... you name it! This is a two-week class meeting on Saturday. Session 1 is 9/24 and 10/1; session 2 is 10/29 and 11/5. $30, supplies extra (10% store discount for class materials).

This fall, we're teaching socks a little bit differently. Helen will hold a series of 3 Saturday workshops, each focused on a different part of the sock-knitting experience. The first Saturday you will learn how to cast on depending on how you want to make your socks: dpn's, two circulars or using the magic loop method. The second Saturday you will turn the heel; and the last Saturday you will learn the kitchener stitch and cast on for the second sock. You can register for all three workshops or just one. The dates are 10/17, 10/31 and 11/14. $10 per workshop.

Knit to Change is a new class we're offering this Fall. Studies have shown that it takes 28 days to break a habit. You and the other class participants will meet 4 times in 28 days, and at the end you'll each have a beautiful shawl to show for it. It doesn't matter what your goal is --want to quit smoking? or get a handle on your overeating?-- you'll benefit from the support and encouragement from the group and the relaxing atmosphere. Taught by Helen. 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, 11/10. $40, supplies extra (10% store discount for class materials).

Double Color Scarf workshop teaches you how to make a simple double-knit scarf (pictured at top in two different color combinations). It's a very easy pattern with only 4 rows that repeat, but the result is eye-catching and works equally well for a man or a woman. Uses one or two skeins each of Koigu KPPPM and Malabrigo, depending on whether you want a short or long scarf. Taught by Ellen on 10/18. $20, supplies extra (10% store discount for class materials).

Finally, Intro to Ravelry is a new workshop for anyone who's interested in participating more fully in the online community for knitters and crocheters, but is perhaps intimidated by the technology or unfamiliar with social networking on the web. There is no knitting in this workshop, and no supplies required but you need to get an invitation to open a Ravelry account ahead of time (unless you already have one). Go here for a Ravelry invitation, and follow the prompts. The Ravelry account is free. 10/25, $20.

NOTE: Helen's Knit a Beaded Bracelet with Yarn class on 9/19 is sold out. If you haven't taken it yet, but would still like to, let us know! If there's enough interest we may schedule another session. Meanwhile, if you want to try winging it, the pattern is free with the purchase of yarn and beads!
