Free Mitt Pattern

MATERIALS:
1 Skein Maxima Trekking (75% superwash wool& 25% nylon with 459 yards)
#7 double pointed needles
Stitch markers
Waste yarn

SIZE:
  to fit an 8” hand circumference


GAUGE:  20 sts = 4” in stockinette stitch with two strands held together

PATTERN NOTES & ABBREVIATIONS:
~The mitten can be made wider by adding stitches in multiples of 4.
~For the mittens pictured, two different colorways of Maxima were knit together.
~Hand dyed sock yarn creates a unique color pattern.
Pm = place marker
Sm = slip marker
M1 = pick up the bar between sts and knit through the back loop (creates a st)
Kfb = knit into the front and back of the same stitch (creates a st)
K2xP2 Rib = K2 stitches, P2 stitches keep repeating these 4 stitches
K2tog = knit two stitches together

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

CUFF:
~With two strands held together, cast on 32 sts dividing sts on 3 needles as such: 10 on first needle, 12 on middle needle and 10 on last needle.
~Join into the round being careful not to twist sts.
~Work in K2xP2 Rib for 4.5”.
~Knit 4 rounds

THUMB GUSSET:

~Next round work as follows:  K15, pm, K1, M1, K1, pm, k15
~Work the next rounds as follows:
Round 1: K15, sm, kfb, k1, kfb, sm, k15
Round 2: knit all stitches
Round 3: K15, sm, kfb, k3,kfb, sm, k15
Round 4 : knit all stitches
Round 5: K15, sm, kfb, k5, kfb, sm, k15
Round 6: knit all stitches
Round 7: K15, sm, kfb, k7, kfb, sm, k15
Round 8: knit all stitches
Round 9: K15, sm, kfb, k9, kfb, sm, k15
Round 10: knit all stitches
Round 11: K15, sm, kfb, K11, kfb, sm, k15
Round 12, 13 & 14: knit all stitches (15 sts between markers)
~Knit to first marker, remove marker and put 15 sts on waste yarn, remove the second marker, cast on 3 sts, knit remaining stitches. 
~Redistribute sts  so that there are 11 sts on each needle.

HAND:

~Knit every round till mitten reaches the base of your middle finger.
~Next round:  K2tog, K1, P2, (K2, P2) repeat to end of round.
~Work in K2xP2 Rib for an additional 4 rounds.
~Cast off all stitches in rib formation.

THUMB:

~Put 15 sts on waste yarn back onto needles, with Right Side facing and using two strands of yarn, pick up 3 sts from the cast on sts for the hand, knit across the 15 sts
~Distribute the 18 sts evenly on the 3 needles (the picked up stitches should be the beginning of the round)
~Knit one round
~Next round:  K2tog, knit till 2 sts remain, K2tog (16 sts).
~Work in K2xP2 Rib for 4 rounds.
~Cast off all stitches in rib formation
~Weave in all ends.
